| FE White Paper: recruitment and retention programmes
LLUK is pleased to announce that work is underway on the four recruitment and retention programmes, outlined in last year’s FE White Paper. The new programme team is based in the Leeds office and work was started in April. A formal launch will take place in the autumn.
The programmes will have a major impact on the FE sector in England, alongside the other FE reform activities that LLUK is leading on, including the FE Workforce Strategy. They will encouraging world-class management and leadership, and improve the vocational skills of teachers, tutors and trainers. Read more |

Lifelong Learning UK welcomes Government skills report
The Government response in England to the Leitch review, entitled ‘World Class Skills: Implementing the Leitch Review of Skills in England’ was delivered to Parliament on 18th July. It was announced by Rt Hon John Denham MP, Secretary of State at the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills. Read more |

| Archives survey to reveal workforce data
Lifelong Learning UK is studying the results of a survey that should reveal more about staff working in archives and records management in England.
The survey, which concluded in mid August, is designed to provide detailed information about staff and the nature of their employment, prior to further studies into their training needs. Read more |

| Public services SSCs announce partnership agreement for joint working
A number of Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) have announced their intention to work collaboratively for the delivery of excellence in public services across the UK.
Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) has formed an alliance to work with Asset Skills, Government Skills, Skills for Care and Development and Skills for Health. The intention is to share information openly, and to act collectively when it is less resource intensive or more cost effective than acting individually. This builds on existing public sector and public service Skills for Business groups across the UK. Read more |

| Teaching attracts construction workers
More than 130 construction workers in England have taken a first step towards a career in teaching after attending specially-designed courses.
Forty-one employees who work in construction and building services engineering completed a Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) programme at one of three FE colleges, while a further 91 completed a two-day taster programme and have the option of progressing to the longer PTLLS course. Following the success of the programmes in England, a similar campaign is now underway in Scotland. Read more |

| Employers offered solutions to skills gaps
Ten possible solutions to the skills needs of the lifelong learning workforce across the UK are being put forward for further discussion and development.
The suite of solutions, drawn up as part of LLUK’s sector skills agreement (SSA), will be the subject of talks involving employers and stakeholders over the next few months. Read more |

| Youth work review draws to conclusion
New occupational standards for employees in youth work will be submitted to the Sector Skills Development Agency next month. The professional and national occupational standards were drawn up following consultations held across the UK during the past 12 months.
Once the final version has been agreed by the project working group in late September, they will be sent to the SSDA for approval. If all goes well, the standards should be published by the end of 2007. Read more |
