Lifelong Learning UK announce 2007 Annual Conference

Edinburgh International Conference Centre is the venue for ‘Meet the Challenge, Manage the Change’, the second LLUK Annual Conference. Following on from the success for last year’s inaugural event in London, the line up this year is equally stellar.

Speakers at the December event include Sir David Melville CBE, Chair, Lifelong Learning UK; David Hunter, Chief Executive Lifelong Learning UK; Sir Reg Empey MLA, Ulster Unionist Leader and MLA for Belfast; and Senior Industrialist Nigel Crouch. Further high calibre speakers will be announced in coming weeks.

LLUK consulting on FE Workforce Strategy in England

Consultation is underway by LLUK on a strategy that will ensure the FE workforce is prepared to meet the challenges set out in World Class Skills.

The strategy is currently out for consultation via the LLUK website until 31st October 2007.

Ministerial approval for new professional teaching standards in Wales

John Griffiths AM, Deputy Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills has announced a set of new professional teaching standards for the lifelong learning sector in Wales. The aim is to raise teaching standards for all teachers, tutors and trainers and in turn increase the achievements of learners across Wales.

These new standards are part of the delivery of the vision for education announced in last year’s ‘The Learning Country – Vision into Action’, the strategic plan for education, lifelong learning and skills in Wales until 2010. They address the need to drive up standards of teaching and attainment in all learning settings while valuing and supporting practitioners.

Learning support qualifications framework in consultation

It has been estimated, that there are over 50,000 learning support and learning resource staff working in the FE sector in England. Learning support makes an important contribution to the retention, achievement and progression of many learners.

Earlier this year, LLUK developed a set of draft national occupational standards (NOS) for learning support practitioners in England, and a document describing their role. The aim of these standards is to increase parity across the workforce and raise standards.

Scotland’s construction workers urged to pass on skills

Research by Sector Skills Councils in Scotland has shown a lack of lecturers, technicians, assessors and verifiers to work with people who want to go into construction and building services. Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) is now working in partnership with Construction Skills, Summit Skills and Asset Skills to address this.

LLUK has undertaken a recruitment campaign to look for experienced construction and building services workers who can pass on their skills and knowledge to the next generation.

Largest collection of England FE Sector workforce data begun by LLUK

A brand new collection of workforce data from the FE sector in England is now to be undertaken by LLUK. The data, from Further Education (FE), Work Based Learning (WBL) and Adult and Community Learning (ACL) providers, will monitor the workforce to ensure government targets on qualifications and diversity of the workforce are being met. It will also be used to develop plans to ensure that the workforce becomes skilled and competitive. Read more

Catalyst - changing the face of FE in England

Those interested in finding out more on how they can be involved in changing the face of further education (FE) in England have a new place to go.

As reported in our August e-Bulletin, LLUK has been commissioned by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) to deliver a suite of four sub-programmes detailed in part of the 2006 White Paper “Further Education: Raising Skills, Improving Life Chances”. These initiatives are now live and have been collectively entitled the Catalyst programme.

Business and colleges ask for MPs support to work together

Employers and colleges this month called on MPs to support a new initiative that for the first time unites the demand and supply of education and training.

“Unified to Deliver”, a new alliance between colleges and businesses will mean that workforce training can now be decided and delivered directly. The partnership between employers and college principals will truly demonstrate “demand-led” skills policy in action.
